“Nepenthe” appears in Homer’s Odyssey as a drug banishing grief or trouble from a person’s mind. In South Africa, when I was growing up, Protea flowers were seen as ‘funeral flowers’ and I never understood why… only recently I discovered that these beautiful flowers serves as a potion to induce forgetfulness of pain and sorrow. Hence I titled this drypoint etch ‘nepenthe’.”
