The saying calm before the storm or “stilte voor die storm” in Afrikaans refers to a lull or temporary period of quiet before a presage of difficult times or events such as a storm. Inspired by this saying, at first glance the artwork has a sense of calm depicted by a circular monotype printed on the paper, however if one takes a closer look, one would see a forbidding image of a stormy sea contained in the circle. Similarly, real-life periods of calm and peace will inevitably be followed by looming unrest, or turmoil one must work through.
